The Film Review – XX (2017)
XX is a movie that explores some of the different horror subgenres, but through the lens of four female directors. But if there’s a common theme that holds them together, it’s the position of the mother relative to each situation. The first film, ‘The Box,’ explores the possession subgenre and how two parents might react differently to their children being possessed. The Second film, ‘The Birthday Party,’ looks at the haunted house subgenre and one mother’s attempt at coping with all the ghosts that are haunting her and her home. ‘Don’t Fall’ deals with the horror of nature, and more specifically, Mother Nature. And finally, ‘Her Only Living Son,’ ask the question, how deep does a mother’s love for her son go.
